Afrika Abney works have been praised as imaginative, expressive, and unique. She is a graduate of the Corcoran School of the Arts. Afrika is influenced by Jorge Somarriba, Marvin Sin, Lois M. Jones, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and Sam Gilliam, She has been nominated as Outstanding Emerging Artist for the 17th Mayors Arts Award in 2001 by the DC Commissions. In 1997, Afrika was awarded the Arts in Education grant from the DC Commissions. She has received many other awards from various institutions.

She has designed and implemented arts workshops, and taught art at several private schools, community organizations and government agencies including Academy for Ideal Education, DC Department of Parks and Recreation, and Jubilee Enterprises. Afrika has organized and produced two solo art shows which were held at Norton Kirby Advertising and Phish Tea Cafι located in Washington,DC.
Her paintings have been featured in several publications including The Washington Afro-American, Roll Call , and The Washington Informer, DC North.
